Break from the Bonds

Independence

Independence stands alone in the sea of society

Dressed in only what it earned from the world

Breaking away from the bonds of dependence and ignorance.

This poem is about independence, the what Paulo Coehlo, the author of The Alchemist, its trying to convey about this theme. To be independent is to not really on others when you are achieving your destiny. It is where you trust in yourself, and your friends enough to know you have to fulfil your destiny alone. In many cultures, teenagers have some sort of coming of age task or right of passage that they must complete if they are to become an adult, but most of the time, they have to do this task alone to prove that they can handle the responsibilities of adulthood. But Independence is also knowing when you do need the help of your friends, and not thinking that you have to do your journey alone. The great American explorers Lewis and Clark couldn't have mapped out the entire USA without the help of each other or the Native Americans to guide them along the way. All people of all race, religion, or creed must show Independence at some time in their life, because the ability to depend on themselves is the only way for them to achieve their destiny.
